Statistics Canada is a federal agency that collects and analyzes statistics on Canadians for Canadians. At the main Web page, click on “Canadian Statistics” which are updated on a regular basis. You can obtain information on many aspects of the Canadian economy, for example, primary industries and other industry sectors, current economic conditions, and the latest economic indicators.

The Fair Trade Federation (FTF) is an American organization that works to promote international fair trade and to educate consumers about fair trade issues. FTF members include wholesalers, retailers, and producers who are committed to providing fair wages and good employment opportunities to economically disadvantaged artisans and farmers worldwide.

The Bank of Canada Currency Converter has both current and historical exchange conversions for most of the world's currencies. The Bank of Canada is Canada’s central bank and has a mandate from the federal government to promote the economic and financial welfare of Canadians.

The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) helps promote tourism to and within Canada. The CTC is a Crown corporation which works in partnership with Canadian tourism businesses to plan, direct, manage and implement programs in support of the tourism industry.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is a department of the federal government. CIC is responsible for admitting immigrants, foreign students, visitors and temporary workers to Canada; and for resettling, protecting, and providing a safe haven for refugees.

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has information on current Canada-Cuba Trade Relations, Market Reports, Guide for Canadian Exporters to Cuba, and the Caribbean Export Development Agency. The site also offers travel and tourism links and a link to the Latin American Network Information Center at the University of Texas.

Industry Canada is a federal department that is focused on helping Canadians build a stronger economy. The department helps Canadians by offering information on business growth, job growth and opportunities, sound investments, international trade, and innovative business practices.

The Canadian Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) offers Canadians up-to-date information on countries and regions in terms of foreign policy, international trade, and travel assistance. The department also has programs on Canadian culture, education, and youth exchanges and initiatives.

The Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) is a not-for-profit Canadian organization. The Forum was founded by members of industry and government to develop international trade training programs and services for Canadians.

 

CHAPTER 1–TEACHER GUIDE

Lesson 1-1

The World Factbook is supported by the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States. This print and online publication was developed to make information about foreign places accessible to the general public. The publishers collect information about foreign places, then analyze it and interpret it to produce a finished, easy-to-understand reference text.

Lesson 1-2

The Fur Council of Canada is a non-profit federation that represents people working in different businesses related to the Canadian fur trade. The Council offers educational resources for schools including a video called Fur: The Fabric of a Nation which details the history of the fur trade in Canada.

Canadian Company Capabilities is an Industry Canada/Strategis site that has an extensive database of Canadian companies. The company profiles include contact details, a description of the company, and information about its business activities, products, and markets.

Lesson 1-3

The Canadian Exporters Catalogue Web site is supported by the World Export Network. This site provides information about Canadian exporting companies and is designed to help connect importing and exporting buyers and suppliers. The site has an electronic catalogue that can be navigated by type of industry.

Hoover's Online is supported by Hoover's, Inc., an American company that collects and provides detailed company, industry, and market information.

The System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR) Web site has securities-related information about Canadian companies. The system allows users to gain immediate access to public company and mutual fund information. It also provides a communications link among issuers, filers, and the securities regulatory authorities.

Lesson 1-5

DFAIT has two Web sites that are useful for this lesson.

a) The “Canadians in the World” Web site is an educational resource featuring a wide menu of topics about Canada's international relations, including our participation in GATT, the WTO, the UN and other international organizations, humanitarian efforts, culture, science, sports and business.

b) The “Trade Negotiations and Agreements” site has information and links on Canadian regional and bilateral trade agreements and other kinds of trade arrangements.

Company Profile (HBC)

The Hudson Bay Company is Canada's largest department store retailer and oldest corporation. The HBC Web site provides online shopping for HBC products and for the products of their various divisions: Zellers, Home Outfitters, and HBC Rewards.

North American Fur Auctions Inc. (NAFA) is an international company that sells raw fur pelts at public auctions. NAFA's Web site has information about fur sales and auctions, and a listing of various fur trade organizations.

ICE Activities for 1.2, Activity 2. (b)

Tobacco.org is a news database of articles concerning tobacco. The organization also provides information about the history of tobacco and various other aspects of the tobacco industry. This link is to an article called, “Economic Aspects of Tobacco during the Colonial Period 1612-1776.”

The University of Toronto’s The World Sugar History Newsletter (1982-1997) publishes information about the history of the sugar industry. The Newsletter includes details of all aspects of the sugar industry, including production, refining, marketing, consumption, company histories, union histories, and personalities.

The National Cotton Council of America is dedicated to helping U.S. cotton industry segments compete effectively and profitably in markets at home and abroad. The Council serves as the central forum for consensus-building among producers, warehousers, merchants, cottonseed crushers, cooperatives and textile manufacturers.

The “History of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade” is one of DFAIT's educational resource “Canadians in the World” Web sites.

Our Past: The History of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade” is a DFAIT publication of the history of the Department and Canada’s development as an independent nation.

Career Profile, Question 2

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) is a national charitable organization that works towards improving living conditions for all animals across Canada. CFHS is committed to ending the suffering of animals by working with the public, government, industry, the scientific community, educators, and the media to achieve its goal.

Chapter Challenges, Thinking/Inquiry Activity #2

The wtoaction.org Web site is sponsored by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The site offers anti-WTO resources and information on actions, protests, and arguments against the World Trade Organization and its policies.

BLM 1-3

Annotated Web Link–TG Section: Valley K Greenhouses is in the Battle River Valley, southeast of Camrose, Alberta. The company sells many different plants and gardening accessories, for example, lily bulbs, hanging baskets, flowering planters, roses. Valley K even offers custom growing on request.

Triple V Ranch Ltd. is a Canadian wholesaler of Christmas trees and wreaths. The company which is located in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, grows many types and sizes of trees.

Richmond Specialty Mushroom Farms Ltd. is a research and development company for growing mushrooms. The company uses a computer controlled modular system for growing oyster mushrooms, and the Web site describes the system and explains how people can get started in growing mushrooms themselves.

Zander Sod Co. Ltd. is a Canadian company that produces and distributes various forms of sod. They are a major supplier of sod for many of Canada's top-rated golf courses.

Beemaid Honey Ltd. is a Canadian company that produces 100% pure Canadian honey. Beemaid is Canada's largest marketer of consumer packaged honey and has distributing centers around the world.
