The Consumer Connection from Industry Canada explains what a voluntary code is, why and when such codes are used, and some of the drawbacks that arise when setting voluntary codes.

Ethicscentre.ca (formerly the Canadian Centre for Ethics and Corporate Policy) is a not-for-profit organization that works to develop and maintain an ethical corporate culture in Canada. The Centre’s Web site has links to information on codes of conduct, sustainability reporting, and social investment.

CBC’s Marketplace consumer affairs television program maintains a Web site with listings and descriptions of current (and archived) consumer product warning and recalls. The award-winning Marketplace program has been on the air for over 30 years.

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) is an administrative tribunal that operates within Canada’s trade remedies system. The tribunal conducts inquiries and investigations into trade issues (for example, dumping and safeguards) and then reports to Parliament through the Ministry of Finance.

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a coalition of 160 international companies (in 30 countries) that are committed to sustainable development. WBCSD works towards sustainable development by promoting eco-efficiency, innovation and corporate social responsibility.

The Canadian Business for Social Responsibility (CBSR) not-for-profit organization develops, shares, and implements corporate social responsibility. Current CBSR projects include “GoodCompany Guidelines,” “Greening Your Workplace,” and “Business Beyond Kyoto.”

The Institute for Global Ethics (IGE) promotes what it calls “ethical fitness” in individuals, institutions, and nations through research, public discourse, and practical action. IGE publishes documents and holds seminars designed to influence educational programs, organizations, and public policy.

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) promotes better living for all people through innovations that are designed to help societies live sustainably. IISD recommends policy on international trade and investment, economic policy, climate change policies, measurement and indicators, and natural resource management.

TakingITGlobal (TIG) is an international organization, led by young people in more than 190 countries who collaborate on projects that address global problems. TIG sponsors events, organizations, and scholarships. The TIG Web site has related discussions, workshops, and reports on projects in different countries.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is a world business organization that speaks on behalf of enterprises from all sectors in every part of the world. ICC promotes an open international trade and investment system. The ICC Web site has guides to corporate governance, piracy reports, intellectual property information, and online contracting facilities.

DFAIT’s “Viva Canada Mexico” Web site has a country profile and a current summary of relations between Canada and Mexico, along with information on trade and investments, culture and education, and travel and tourism. The site also has a link to the Latin America Network Information Center at the University of Texas.

Lesson 10-2

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has, on its Web site, the Kyoto Protocol text, the status of the protocol’s ratification, greenhouse gas emissions information, and an archive of documents related to the Kyoto Protocol.

The New York Times Magazine publishes online current columns by “ethicist” and New Yorker Randy Cohen. Cohen, the author of several books, writes articles and columns for The New Yorker and the Washington Post: he also writes for television shows and has won four Emmy awards.

International Company Profile on page 308

The Ethics in Action Awards are given for leadership in corporate social responsibility. Sponsors of the awards include Canadian Business for Social Responsibility, the Better Business Bureau, and the Globe Foundation of Canada.

The Ontario Government Occupational Health and Safety Act Web site explains some of the basic contents of the Act and provides links to further information and guides on the rights and responsibilities of Ontario employees and employers.

Junior Achievement International works with its member nations around the world to develop and implement economic education programs for young people through a partnership between business and education.

ICE Activities for 10.3, Activity 1. (b)

Bombardier is a large international Canadian corporation founded by J.-Armand Bombardier in 1942. Bombardier's Web site has statements about its social responsibility: corporate social commitment, corporate environment policy, and occupational health and safety.

Air Canada's Community Investment Program supports various Canadian organizations. The program directors consider requests for donations from those organizations that are working to improve life for Canadian youth or that are conducting research into diseases.

Chapter Challenges Activities, Application Activity 2

CARE Canada is an organization committed to humanitarian assistance efforts. CARE is involved in a broad range of long-term development programmes in water and community health, agroforestry and conservation, and small enterprise and income generation. CARE Canada's Tools for Development program provides small businesses in developing countries with used tools and equipment donated by Canadian companies and individuals.
